What I’ve learned about software development from the ancient Greeks
Mark Seemann - Programmer and Software Architect @
Conference Hall
12nd November, 14:00-15:00
The ancient Greeks were pioneers of software development. The Spartans, also known as Lacedaemonians, invented the lambda calculus programming language, and where so proud of it that they put its logo (λ) on their shields.
The Pythagoreans knew that computation held the key to a long happy life.
Based on the works of his teacher, Socrates, Plato invented the virtual machine. There are many programming languages, but they all run on the same abstraction.
No, really, of course the ancients didn’t invent computers, but they did think about things. Some of the ancient wisdom still applies today, even to software development.
